Dominica: Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit has shared his official statement on the floods caused due to heavy rainfall in the nation. The Government has assured citizens of a coordinated and immediate response following the severe weather conditions that impacted the eastern and north-eastern districts of the islands on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
PM Skerrit issued an official statement and said that the authorities have acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the residents in the affected areas. While they are commending their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The statement emphasised that although the weather system dealt a severe blow, the situation could have been far worse.
Government to Initiate Urgent Response Measures
Government officials of Dominica confirmed that a special Cabinet meeting has been convened to assess the situation and to initiate urgent response measures. Plans are already in place for teams to begin on-the-ground assessments and relief efforts that will begin early Monday morning.
The administration has also engaged with regional and international partners to support recovery initiatives. Officials further reassured the most severely impacted that assistance will be provided promptly, following comprehensive evaluations of the damage.
Also, residents across the island have been urged to support one another during this crucial period. The government called on citizens to:
- assist neighbours in distress
- offer shelter where possible
- remain vigilant to potential hazards,
- stay alert of unstable infrastructure and displaced animals
Special Honour to Public Officers
Notably, special recognition was given to public officers, particularly personnel in road maintenance, drainage, water, and electricity services, for their rapid and committed response during the crisis. Their efforts were described as instrumental in mitigating further damage and ensuring public safety.
Authorities have advised citizens to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay clear of potential dangers such as live electrical wires. Safety remains a top priority as recovery operations continue.
Reaffirming its commitment, the government stated that it will respond decisively. As it has in previous disasters, to restore normalcy and support affected communities. Officials concluded by expressing confidence in the nation’s ability to overcome the current challenge through unity and collective effort.
Education Ministry Orders School Closures
The Ministry of Education of Dominica confirmed that the schools will remain close due to the severe trough system that has impacted Dominica. As, heavy rainfall and widespread flooding have caused significant disruption across several districts, particularly in the Eastern and Northeastern Districts.
Ministry and the Office of Disaster Management have also conducted assessments and confirmed that access to several schools is either compromised or entirely impassable.
Therefore, the Ministry of Education informs that there will be no school for students of the following schools on Monday April 27, 2026:
- Concord Primary
- Atkinson Primary
- Salybia Primary
- Sineku Primary
- Castle Bruce Primary
- San Sauveur Primary
- Wesley Primary
- Wills Strathmore Stevens (WS Stevens) Primary
- Temple Seventh Day Adventist Primary
- Castle Bruce Secondary
- North-East Comprehensive
