Dominica: Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, received a group from the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) led by its Executive Director, Dr Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas, and extended a warm welcome on March 23, 2022.

Dr Cubillas was joined by several officials from AMEXCID, including Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno, who is the Ambassador-Designate of the United Mexican States to Dominica and also serves as a Special Envoy of Mexico, as well as Actuary Gloria Sandoval Salas, who is the General Director of the Mesoamerican Integration and Development project.

During the meeting, PM Skerrit discussed the progress of the Mexico-CARICOM-FAO Initiative, “Cooperation for adaptation as well as resilience to climate change in the Caribbean,” and looked forward to the Fifth Mexico-CARICOM Summit scheduled for May 2023.

The Summit is expected to consider CARICOM-Mexico cooperation in Climate Adaptation, Technology, and Health Transfer. However, in the last CARICOM-Mexico meeting, they focused more on areas like: Disaster risk reduction, Agriculture, transnational organized crime and the development of an Integrated Risk Management Strategy for the Caribbean.

During the visit to Dominica, Dr Laura enjoyed a talk with the Dominica Housing and Urban Development Minister, Melissa Skerrit. They considered possible areas of cooperation between the sister nation and Mexico.

Moreover, they also had a working session with other officials of the Dominica Fisheries Division to discuss the opportunities and the challenges faced by the aquaculture sector.

During a meeting with various ministers, such as Roland Royer and Miriam Blanchard, the Executive Director of AMEXCID used her official Twitter account to report that they had conversed with Dominica’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, regarding cooperation priorities with CARICOM. One of the notable initiatives discussed was the “Cooperation for Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in the Caribbean.”

After the meeting with Agriculture Minister Roland Royer, Dr Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas stated, “We met with Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy of Dominica, where we discussed various projects related to food and nutrition security with this neighbouring nation.”

She also met Dominica’s Minister of Labour, Miriam Blanchard, and her team and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Energy of Dominica with an intention to boost relations between Mexico and Dominica.
