Dominica PM Skerrit Calls for US Support in addressing Caribbean Challenges

Dominica: Roosevelt Skerrit, the Prime Minister of Dominica and Chairman of CARICOM, recently met with US officials to discuss the pressing challenges facing the Caribbean region. These challenges include energy security, food security, and the situation in Haiti. PM Skerrit called for US support in addressing these issues during the meeting held on Wednesday.

Dominica: Roosevelt Skerrit, the Prime Minister of Dominica and Chairman of CARICOM, recently met with US officials to discuss the pressing challenges facing the Caribbean region. These challenges include energy security, food security, and the situation in Haiti. PM Skerrit called for US support in addressing these issues during the meeting held on Wednesday.

During the CARICOM meeting, PM Skerrit met with the US diplomat, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Democratic Leader in the US House of Representatives, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries addressed Caribbean leaders on Wednesday.

In his address, PM Skerrit called US support in order to address and sort out some of the major challenges like; food security, energy security, correspondent banking, issues of blacklisting, and access to concessional development financing, as well as the situation in Haiti.


 


During the meeting with the heads, the US Secretary heads his idea for support to multinational forces to bring back security in Haiti. He also highlighted that this is a matter to receive significant attention from their end.

Moreover, he also emphasized some other points they need to focus on, like Climate Change and Crime. He also pledged to provide $5.5 million in aid to help the farmers so that they can increase their productivity and get access to technology.

Congressman Jeffries also pledged solidarity in addressing a number of critical issues, including regional security and the climate crisis.

PM Skerrit mentioned that they talked about partnering with individuals dedicated to providing practical aid in Haiti to help address the ongoing crisis affecting the Haitian people.

Furthermore, he asserted that he is looking forward to collaborating with Rwanda, which has also offered to engage the African Union.

According to PM Skerrit, the CARICOM integration movement’s motive is to achieve free movement for all people to live and work within its member countries.
