Dominica: President Sylvanie Burton joined the world leaders in discussions at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The session began on Sept 09, 2025 and the UNGA High-Level Week is being observed from Sept 22 to 26, 2025.
Reportedly, the UNGA session this year is following the theme ‘Better Together: 80 years and more for Peace, Development and Human Rights’.
The 80th Anniversary of the UN foundation is an opportunity to return the organisation back to its founding mission of promoting peace and security around the world. In 2025, the US is prioritising three themes through the engagement at the United Nations: Peace, Sovereignty and Liberty.
Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) stated that President Sylvanie Burton is expected to deliver her speech to the general Assembly on Thursday, Sept 25, 2025. Her address will highlight the pressing global issues facing the international community, such as:
- Poverty
- Inequality
- Peace and Justice
- Climate Change and Resilience
- also, Decline of multilateral cooperation
President Burton will also emphasise the impacts of underdevelopment, conflicts, wars, along with economic sanctions and trade restrictions, which disproportionately affects Small Island Developing States like Dominica.
As per the source, the leading delegation to the Assembly of Dominica, President Sylvanie Burton is accompanied by her spouse and first gentleman – Gilbert Burton, Foreign Affairs Minister – Vince Henderson, Permanent Representative of Dominica to the United Nations – Philbert Aaron, Deputy Permanent Representative – Kelvar Darroux and Consul Sheldon Anthony Peter.
Office of the Prime Minister further added to its statement that with President Sylvanie Burton participating at the United Nations General Assembly, she will reaffirm Dominica’s commitment to advance dialogue. Burton will strengthen global cooperation and ensure that the voices and concerns of the small island nations are heard on the world stage. She will make sure that the gathering comes out fruitful to find solutions to those concerns too.
Meanwhile, till the time Sylvanie Burton is in New York, Josette Matthew will fulfill the responsibilities of acting President of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
