Dominica is set for a well-deserved improvement to one of its most picturesque and treasured attractions ‘Indian River’. The Minister of Tourism – Denise Charles-Pemberton signed an official contract with Shevon Royer of Premium Building Solutions worth $190,145.95 XCD. The deal aims to carry out vital site maintenance at the river.
Reportedly, the project is already underway and is anticipated to be completed in 90 days. It will cover the key areas that matter most to the visitor and will enhance their travel experience.
Under project, several areas will be redesigned such as:
- The parking lots will be resurfaced
- The entry and exit gates will be repaired
- Interpretative room will be improved to create a richer space for the stories of the river, mainly considering its people and heritage
Know Indian River
Dominica’s Indian River begins in the Morne Diablotin National Park, at the base of Morne Turner, and serves as a vital water source for Portsmouth. As it flows down the landscape, it feeds Brandly falls, near Brandy Estate, that adds up to the scenic beauty of the area.
The Indian River then meets Maikey River at Beausejour that enhance its flow. As it continues its journey, it intersects with Segment-11 of the waitukubuli National Trail along with the Melville Hall – Portsmouth Road, it is providing hikers a glimpse of its calm, brackish waters
Historical Significance and Popularity
Indian River winds through the landscape of northern Dominica, and joins the Barry River before flowing under Ross Boulevard. From there, it continues its journey which finally gets empty into Prince Rupert Bay between Zicack and Glanvillia on the Caribbean Sea.
The river is known for its eco-tourism offerings, it provides boat rides through dense Bwa Mang mangroves and lush forests. A popular stop is the Bush Bar, where visitors can have refreshments in the serene surroundings.
The river got more popular when featured in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean.
