Elite Women Field Runners of Africa will lead ‘Sea of Pink’ for Totalsports Women’s Race

The event is held annually to celebrate the Women’s Day and in support of spreading the awareness regarding Breast Cancer. The Totalsports Women’s Race will take the runners on a race of 10km and 5km through some of the iconic landmarks of the Mother City ‘Cape Town’.

Cape Town: Totalsports Women’s Race attracted Africa’s Elite community. The race was held on Friday, August 09, 2024 to commemorate Women’s Day. The City of Cape Town supported the event which featured a 10km race and a fun run of 5km.

Reportedly, Elite Women Field Runners of Africa will lead a 12,000 strong ‘sea of pink’ in the streets of the CBD for the Totalsports Women’s Race this Friday.

Glenrose Xaba, from South Africa who holds a 10km record; Tadu Nare from Ethiopia, a 2023 SPAR Grand Prix series champion; Selam Gebre from Ethiopia, Diniya Abaraya and Ebste Btaw with Marion Chepkoech and Christine Njoki of Kenya will lead the line in the elite category.

The event is held annually to celebrate the Women’s Day and in support of spreading the awareness regarding Breast Cancer. The Totalsports Women’s Race will take the runners on a race of 10km and 5km through some of the iconic landmarks of the Mother City ‘Cape Town’.

Clad in their pink t-shirts, the thousands of participants will proudly run, in support of the PinkDrive’s campaign, which runs education programmes about breast cancer as well as improving the services that are available to women across South Africa.

Throughout the event day, PinkDrive will offer, free clinical breast examinations and analysis, highlighting the significance of self-breast examinations.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that the Totalsports Women’s Race is not just a day for sports, but it is an occasion for healthy living, raising awareness about worthy causes and commemorating the significance behind Women’s Day for the country.

The City of Cape Town’s sponsorship of the event over several years has formed part of the commitment to ensure that they contribute to provide support for women in many facets of life, whether participating in sports or in terms of their overall health. “We wish all the runners a successful race in the Mother City,” said Alderman Smith.
