Cape Town, South Africa: The Fire and Rescue Services Spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, released an update regarding the city’s fire. Earlier, the Fire and Rescue Service team of the city responded to a building caught in an emergency fire in Woodstock.
According to the update by Jermaine Carelse, an emergency call was received regarding the fire in Tide Road, Woodstock, that began in a derelict building at 3:10 p.m.
As per the sources, two other buildings were also affected. One of the two buildings was for a recycling business with stacks four metres high. The fire also destroyed four trucks.
As of now, no serious injuries or fatalities were reported. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Reportedly, the firefighters are still busy damping down the scene.
Earlier, the Spokesperson of Disaster Risk Management – Charlotte Powell also shared an update.
As per the update by Charlotte Powell the Disaster Risk Management Centre has been coordinating and making assessments following three informal settlement fires early morning.
Notably, numerous structures were destroyed due to the calamity:
- 135 structures were damaged in Seawinds
- 60 structures were destroyed in Jim Se Bos
- 45 structures were destroyed in Wallacedene
In total, nine hundred people were affected due to the fire. It is to be mentioned that the Non-Governmental Organisation partners, Gift of the Givers and Islamic Relief South Africa, have promised to provide the following:
- Mattresses
- Hot Cooked Meals
- Blankets
- Baby Care Packs
- Clothing
- Toiletry Packs
Onsite assessments will be done to keep a check and assess the extent of infrastructure damage that is caused by the fires, officially from the:
- Electricity Department
- Informal Settlements Management
- Water and Sanitation
- Solid Waste Management
