The victim is identified as Joseph Mambwe, aged 20, who attempted to grab a firearm from a police officer.

According to the police report, this all started on December 30, 2023. The Zesco Kapiri-Mposhi branch received a report of vandalism where a 70-meter armoured cable was cut and stolen by unknown vandals, and since then, security personnel, including Police officers, have been assigned to guard the place.

On January 2, 2024, around 10 in the night, a team of security officers led by inspector Simon Zimba and two others Woman, Sergeant Kapumba and Misheck Siakambala, a Security Officer from Zesco, went for patrol at the scene of vandalism. It is alleged that upon arrival at 12:30 on January 3, 2024, they saw a torchlight and found vandals who attempted to steal a vandalized underground armoured cable. Warning shots were fired in the Air, which made other vandals flee away.

However, one of the vandals, who looked drunk, charged towards Inspector Simon Zimba with a view to grab his AK 47 Rifle. During the struggle, the vandal touched the trigger, and 11 rounds were discharged after Misheck Siakambala was heard shouting, saying he was shot, and he was rushed to Kapiri-Mposhi District Hospital, where it was discovered that he was shot in the stomach and neck.

Later on, he was evacuated to Kabwe General, where he died around night. The vandal, Joseph Mambwe, who wanted to grab the gun, was shot in the right thigh and was also evacuated to Kabwe General Hospital, where he was admitted under police guard.
