Kenya: The Forum for African Women Educationists (FAWE) conducted a Young Women Safe Space Launch. The Event was held in partnership with the Binti Care Foundation at their Centre in Kiungani Community. The Event aimed to empower girls and young women and ensure their active participation in society.
It also enables them to build their social networks among peers and under a trusted female mentor from their community. This would give them a relatable experience of being a teen mother.
The project was launched to support teenage mothers from the Kiungani Community who are both in and out of school.
Through this programme, FAWE-Kenya has also established a menstrual production centre for the production of reusable sanitary towels.
The girls at the centre will undergo training on the production of reusable sanitary towels as a way of promoting their socio-economic development.
The pads will be made from locally sourced materials easily available to the girls. This will go a long way in ensuring that girls in school and, by extension, the community have access to a sustainable access point of menstrual products.
This program will work as a tool for delivering program content that includes:-
- promoting SRHR to the girls
- improving gender attitudes and beliefs of girls and young women
- psycho-social support services
- skills development on Income Generating Activities (IGAs)
- Life Skills, among other socio-economic developments.
The activity was graced by several stakeholders including,
- The County Commissioner,
- The chief guest,
- Directors from the state department of gender, children, education, health, TVETs and probation.
Reportedly, The Young Women and Safe Space Launch at Binti Care Foundation Centre was officially led by the Binti Care CEO Elizabeth Mumbi and their Programs Manager Kiongozi Stanley Barasa Siakilo.
Through this initiative, the Binti Care Foundation continues to enrich the lives of women and girls through its noble interventions.
The guests who graced the occasion were led by the DCC County Government of Trans Nzoia and the Director Faith Diplomacy Office of the First Lady Dawson Mudenyo .
The Binti Care Foundation appreciated the county director of the Gender department, Lynette Maybin, and the county director of Youth Sports and Arts, Mark.
They also honoured their staff members for their continuous dedication, service, and commitment to community service.
