However, with the help of the media, she was able to secure a refund and an inquiry from Guinness World Records about whether she would still like to pursue the title. Ebaide now insists that “the decision is no longer hers alone – it is up to her audience to decide.”
The female biker aged 32, Joy has made history as the first documented black African woman to travel solo from East to West Africa on a motorcycle. She attempted an epic solo bike ride from Kenya to Lagos.
The adventure lasted more than three months, which began in Mombasa, Kenya and culminated in Lagos, Nigeria covering over 9000 kms. The bike trip went across nine African countries i.e. Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, Congo, Cameroon and Nigeria.
The wonder journey began when Joy, who is also an afro musician, bought a 250 CC motorbike, which she calls ‘Rory’. Being a novice in riding, she took a one-week training course in Nairobi to prepare for the bike adventure.

As there’s a backstory to this, for someone who survived a horrific car accident at age 23, and remained on a wheelchair for several months until full recovery, it was a triumph of the human will and especially her unbreakable spirit.
Considering this, Udoh Ebaide Joy said that this journey made her decide that she will live her life to the fullest. She wants something more, something special for herself. She expressed, “I love challenges, I love to feel alive.”
Surviving more than the three months of the adventurous journey, Joy conquered her fears, riding through rocky and rough terrains, while exploring the joys, beauty and culture across nine African countries, to finally achieve the dream of a lifetime.
Joy added that on some days, she had to cover at least 300 kms riding her bike and other it would be more than this or less. According to her, the trip taught her that she is resilient and tenacious enough to overcome any challenge that life throws at her.
When she arrived in Lagos, she was warmly welcomed by several other bikers who came in droves to welcome her and celebrated her feat. She later captured her joy in a post on her Instagram handle in July and thanked everyone who supported her.
Joy further expressed that achieving this has caused a big shift in her mind. “Suddenly, I have a myriad of things I want to do and I’m so sure that it will work, because I have achieved something I once thought was too hard to dare,” said Ebaide.
She exclaimed, “I want to plan, start and execute new things. There is a part my brain that believes anything I try will succeed, because I have the tenacity and resilience to see it through.”
Udoh Ebaide Joy further added that she is not the same person. She has changed in the most positive ways. She said that she feels so privileged to achieve this. She can’t wait for many more exciting challenges; she’ll go headlong into. There has never been a better time to feel this alive, it feels good to be here.
