Mauritius: An Endodontic Clinic aiming to provide quality specialised oral health services was launched today by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, at the Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq.

The Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Darsanand Balgobin, the Director of Dental Services at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr Ian Ramdin, as well as other personalities, were present at the launching.

Speaking at the event, Minister Jagutpal dwelt on the importance of endodontic treatment, which is also known as root canal treatment, in the field of dental care and is a safe as well as effective procedure that can save a damaged or infected tooth, preventing the need for tooth extraction and other more invasive dental procedures.

Endodontic clinics, he stated, have been opened in almost all regional hospitals to cater to the public demand while emphasising that it was important for the Bruno Cheong Hospital to have its own clinic to provide quality specialised oral health services to the 180,000 inhabitants of the region of Flacq.

The setting up of the clinic, he mentioned, is in line with the Health Sector Strategic Plan 2020-2024 and the National Action Plan for Oral Health, which recommends ensuring universal access to quality oral health services and decentralisation of health services across the country.

To this end, he pointed out that endodontic clinics at Bay du Tombeau Community Health Centre and Goodlands Mediclinic are in the pipeline and will be operational this year to cater to patients in these regions while reducing the number of patients attending regional hospitals.

The Health Minister also dwelt on the need for the personnel of the hospital to continuously provide customer care and to communicate effectively with patients.

Speaking about the New Flacq Teaching Hospital reaching 75% of its construction phase, he underlined that it will provide state-of-art medical facilities to the inhabitants and will be operational by 2024.

Minister Balgobin, for his part, pointed out that the Endodontic Clinic will ease the lives of patients who used to be channelled to the SSRN hospital for this specialised tooth treatment. He stressed that following the construction of the new hospital at the Flacq, patients will avail themselves of several medical facilities.

As for Dr Ramdin, he reiterated the commitment to providing the highest quality endodontic care to the people of Flacq and beyond while highlighting that everyone deserves access to the best possible dental care.
