South Africa: Following the unfortunate disaster which befell the people of Jagersfontein, on Sunday, 11 September 2022, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela visited the area on 12 September. The information received thus far is that the mine dam in the area burst, which left destruction in its wake and many families displaced. Furthermore, there was one reported fatality. The provincial government sends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Ntate Mosweu. May his soul rest in peace. The dam burst also destroyed property, in the form of homes and vehicles, and left many people in need of medical attention. This, as the mud spillage from the dam, literally made its way into people's homes and caused unimaginable damage.

The President, who was accompanied by Ministers and other senior government officials, pledged solidarity with the people of Jagersfontein and made a commitment that those whose homes were destroyed would receive support from the government. President Ramaphosa further said an investigation would be launched to determine the cause of this tragedy. This will help us to get to the bottom of this matter. Listening to what the people were telling us, which were raw human stories of tragedy and survival, one had a clear understanding of the extent of this tragedy. The Premier added that "On behalf of the Free State Provincial Government, we join the people of Jaggersfontein during this dark period and once again reiterate our unconditional support and solidarity. The caring government of the people will walk this journey with them."
