Cape Town: Junior City Council (JCC) has elected the new executive committee for the term of year 2024. The City of Cape Town has elected their Executive Committee Members this weekend.
Reportedly, the Office of the Speaker is pleased to announce the successful election of Cape Town’s new JCC Executive Committee, under the City Speaker – Alderman Felicity Purchase and with the incredible work that is being undertaken by the Councillor Donovon Nelson, who is the appointed JCC Custodian.
The city is committed to foster the civic responsibility among Grade-10 and Grade-11 learners, across the Metropolitan. The speaker mentioned the remarkable contributions of the outgoing Executive Committee, whose term concluded in 2023.
The Office Speaker said that they would like to extend the gratitude for their dedication and impactful service, as their legacy sets a high standard for the incoming committee members.
Moreover, the JCC assists and develops the skills, self-image and leadership abilities of young individuals, enabling them to proudly serve as City Ambassadors.
Considerably, the previous Executive Committee’s term came to an end in 2023, after making a significant contribution to the JCC’s activities and the communities they represent. The city has also extended its gratitude to the outgoing members for their dedication and service.
The newly elected Executive Committee members for the 2024 term are:
- Junior Executive Mayor: Miguel Meyer from Zwaanswyk High School
- Junior Deputy Mayor: Zephaniah Love from Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology
- Junior Speaker: Likhona Vika from Sea Point High School
- Junior Chief Whip: Kirsten Wyld from Curro Century City
As per the sources, these dynamic young leaders were chosen trough a democratic electoral process, supported by the robust campaigning and nominations from the current Junior Council members.
The elections were overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), which were held on Saturday, June 08, 2024 at the Municipal Council Chambers of City of Cape Town.
The Deputy Mayor of the City of Cape Town – Alderman Eddie Andrews made his presence at the event and addressed the Junior Councillors. He urged them to stand firmly for their beliefs, even if they stand alone.
Alderman Andrews challenged the young leaders to reflect on their individual contributions towards the collective future of South Africa, emphasising each of them, who has a significant purpose.
The new Executive Committee is eager to embrace their roles and responsibilities. They are also committed to enhance the JCC’s engagement with external partners and organisations, who are working towards making Cape Town a City of Hope.
As a present speaker, Alderman Purchase said that he heartily welcomes and congratulate the bright new faces and minds that make up the new executive. He also expressed that he is excited to see their progress throughout the course of their term.
