Malawi: Karonga Diocese has pledged their support to 450 farmers from the area of Senior Chief Wasambo in Karonga district. The organization has announced that they would donate 30 solar water pumps to the farmers of the community.
The project is being done through its development desk, Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM). The CADECOM’s Project Coordinator, Matthias Bulukutu talked about the project’s specifications.
He made the announcement to support the farmers on Monday in Chitipa. At the time, he was introducing a two-year project dubbed ‘Climate Just Communities’ (CJC) to the stakeholders of the Karonga District Council
He said that, “The project aims to empower communities to identify their own priorities to be addressed through climate justice support.
Further, he asserted that the project seeks to build resilience to the impacts of climate change. The organization acknowledged the impact of the climate change on the agriculture output for the farmers.
“Among other things, we want to encourage sustainable agriculture by supporting irrigation through the establishment of irrigation schemes for livelihood agriculture,” Bulukutu added.
District Irrigation Officer for Karonga, George Chanya highlighted the global consequences of climate change have negatively affected the agriculture industry.
“For farmers to feed themselves and even sell their produce while combating climate change, agricultural practices must be precise. Resources such as water, land, and energy which are scarce in the natural environment should be exploited more efficiently.
This will allow the farmers to produce more with less resources.
The Karonga Diocese supporting the agriculture stakeholders of the district is being hailed by the members of the country. The administration has recollected that the region has been struggling to produce better output from their farms.
Accordingly, they have urged the farmers to turn to using more modern equipment to multiply their agricultural output.”Providing solar water pumps to farmers will help them boost agricultural production thereby improving food security in the country” he added.
The Project is being funded by Scottish Government’s Climate Justice Fund.
