Botswana: The Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education Dr. Kekgonne Baipoledi visited schools in the South East region. The list of schools that came under the itinerary for the visit includes the Ledumang Senior, Matlala Junior, Nanogang Junior, and Ben Thema Primary schools.
The aim of the visit was to organize a meet-and-greet session for the staff and senior management of the schools. During this visit, the team informed the school staff why it was important to include aspects of child welfare in education.
The government of Botswana has been working hard to promote the welfare of children in the education sector. The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education has been taking the initiative to improve educational opportunities for children.
The Ministry office and its staff have shared several images from the event on their social media. The meetings seek to streamline the efforts of the Ministry. All the schools across Botswana must have equal access to the Ministry.

The Ministry Permanent Secretary said that teachers should also understand what child-friendly environment means. The Ministry representative acknowledged that teachers cannot effectively support their students’ welfare if their own needs aren’t being met appropriately.
He encouraged the school staff to ensure a healthy and supportive working environment. He further reasoned that this would help foster a more conducive learning atmosphere and contribute to overall educational success.
During the meeting, the PS acknowledged that the primary school teachers make diligent efforts to care for their students. This is despite the fact that they often have access to much more limited resources.
The visit was an opportunity for schools to think about their own working and inform the Ministry whether they are providing a child welfare-friendly environment. During the meetings the officials got the opportunity to gain valuable insights and feedback to strengthen the Ministry’s approach to improving child welfare in schools.
