South Africa, Kenya: Agriculture Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko led the launch and signing of the Mukutani Participatory Forest Management Plan and Forest Management Agreement that has taken place in Mukutani Ward, Baringo County.
Mukutani Community Forest Association has planted and sustained 2500 seedlings in their ward and the GSU Base Camp.
The Service has also planted trees over 750 hectares, translating to 1 million seedlings in the larger Baringo County, contributing to the Presidential Directive of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) acknowledged the leadership of the local leaders in the area and their efforts towards conservation. He urged the community to grow more fruit trees as a way of increasing tree cover and food security in their area.
He also noted that as a way of creating employment for the youth, they will be engaged in the Green Army initiative.
Green Zones Development Support Project Phase II has been key in the development of the Mukutani management plan from its initiation to the signing of the program. As a way of providing income generating activities for the community, the project gave Mukutani CFA 40 bee hives, a centrifuge and protective gear for harvesting honey.
Also present at the event was the Project Manager Jerome Mwanzia, RFC Mau Conservancy Francis Kariuki, Baringo County Commissioner CFC, Makutuni Ward MCA, Representatives from the County Government, KEFRI and other KFS officials.
Last month, the Chief Conservator of Forests of Kenya announced the launch of the Mukutani Participatory Forest Management Plan (PFMP) & signing of the corresponding Forest Management Agreement with members of Mukutani Community Forest Association (CFA) in Baringo County.

They took this initiative along with Baringo County Govt, Kenya Police Service, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry of Kenya, and the State Department for Forestry Kenya.
