Kenya: The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) hosted a delegation from the United Kingdom’s Defence Academy for high-level discussions focused on strengthening the efficiency and strategic role of the Port of Mombasa as a leading regional logistics and trade hub. The meeting highlighted ongoing infrastructure investments, modernisation initiatives, and collaborative efforts that aimed at enhancing cargo handling capacity and regional connectivity.
General Manager for Infrastructure Development Engineer – Mathews Amuti spoke on behalf of KPA Chief Executive Officer – Captain William Ruto and noted that the Port of Mombasa has continued to register remarkable growth in container traffic due to sustained operational improvements and infrastructure expansion projects. He emphasised that the authority remains committed to position the port as a competitive gateway for trade within East and Central Africa.
Amuti revealed that the authority has commenced construction works on key infrastructure projects. It includes Berth 19B as well as Berths 23 and 24, which are expected to significantly increase the port’s cargo handling capacity and support the rising demand for maritime trade services. He added that these developments form part of KPA’s broader long-term strategy to improve operational efficiency and facilitate seamless movement of goods across the region.
In addition, the authority is undertaking modernisation of inland container depots to reduce congestion at the seaport and improve cargo distribution networks. According to Amuti, the enhanced inland facilities will strengthen regional logistics systems and provides faster, more efficient services to importers and exporters.
He further acknowledged the contribution of development partners such as the European Union and TradeMark Africa, whose financing and capacity-building support have played a critical role in advancing infrastructure development and operational excellence at the port.
During the engagement, Amuti said, “The focus remains on improving efficiency while positioning our facilities to serve as integrated logistics centers for the wider East and Central African region.”
The visiting delegation, led by the Senior Directing Staff at the UK Defence Academy – Major General Felix Gedney Obe. He commended the Port of Mombasa for its steady growth and improved efficiency. Obe noted that strong coordination among security agencies and operational stakeholders has contributed significantly to maintain safety, boost trade operations, and support the port’s growing influence in regional commerce.
