Kenya: The country is back on track to surpass the number of cruise passengers last year as the country continues to position itself as a premier cruise tourism destination.
Reportedly, the Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary – Rebecca Miano lauded the increase in cruise vessel calls at the Port of Mombasa, noting that the country is capitalizing on the momentum to boost its tourism sector.
Miano further emphasised about the efforts made by Kenya to attract more cruise liners that are yielding tangible results. As the Kenya Port welcomed MV Viking Sky, which is on its maiden call from Mahe, Seychelles, Secretary Miano stated that the impressive performance of the season underlined the growing appeal of Kenya as a cruise hub.
Adding to her statement, Miano said that she and team is optimistic that they will exceed the passenger numbers of last year. She stated that the cruise liners are also creating opportunities for Kenyans to work and contribute to the industry.
MV Viking Sky is carrying 845 passengers and 469 crew members, who docked at Mombasa and marked the arrival of sixth cruise ship, since the circuit began in September 2024. In total, there are nineteen Kenyan crew members who reflect the role of the sector in providing employment.
General Manager for Cargo Operations of Kenya Ports Authority – Dr. Sudi Mwasinago highlighted the aggressive marketing efforts of KPA to position Mombasa and Lamu as top cruise destinations.
Considering another vessels, that are expected to arrive by the end of this month, the status of Mombasa is strengthening as a key player in regional cruise tourism.
Meanwhile, Capt. Fredrik Misson of MV Viking Sky expressed his excitement to dock in Mombasa and praised the pilot crew of KPA for ensuring a smooth and safe arrival.
For next three coming three days, MV Viking Sky passengers will explore the renowned tourist destinations of Kenya and will further enhance the visibility of the country in the global cruise market.
