The Kenya Forest Service launched the Participatory Forest Management Plan (PFMP) for Mwache, Tanza, Mbuguni and Bonje forest ecosystems and communities in Kwale County Yesterday (Wednesday), November 30, 2023.
The Project was based on enchancing the culture of these communities along with improving the forests and the ecosystem. This project launch aimed to promote sustainable forest practices for mangroves and terrestrial forests within the ecosystem.
The Forest Service assured that through this Project, the ecosystem provides essential forest products, carbon sequestration, groundwater recharge, and soil and water conservation.
The forest service emphasised the Project’s richness to improve the county and made it a place for tourist attraction.
Mwache – Tanza – Mbuguni – Bonje forest ecosystem in Kwale County harbours a rich diversity of plant and animal species. It is a tourist attraction and plays a pivotal role in the economic growth of the neighbouring community.
The Participatory Management Plan project has been launched in effective partnership with WWF Kenya, a community-based organisation that cultivates and creates a supportive environment for the people.
As per the Kenya Forest Service, Despite its immense importance, the forest, which comprises 417.2 ha of terrestrial forest and 2067ha of mangroves, has faced challenges to its preservation.
Therefore, the Kenya Forest Service set out to develop a Participatory Forest Management Plan in collaboration with the CFA and partners.
The Project launch was attended by several delegations from the Kenya Forest Service, WWF Kenya and the local county members.
The PFMP director, Beatrice Mbula, officiated it on behalf of the Chief Conservator of Forests. He urged CFA members to harness the natural benefits of the forest through the 17 listed user rights for the well-being of the ecosystem and the community.
The Head of Kenya WWF, Jackson Kiplagat – Kenya, pledged to support the CFA in implementing the PFMP, which will last for five years.
Reportedly, the Mwache, Tanza, Mbuguni and Bonje PFMP Project was an effective initiative by the Kenya Forest Service. The Project aimed to promote the richness of the Kenya Forests and improve the ecosystem of the nation. The Project is a Public-Private-People partnership to save Coastal Kenya Forests.
