South Africa: The Department of Human Settlements‘ Military Veterans Housing Programme distributed 127 houses under the Veterans Housing Programme Policy.
They also held a meeting at the Westgate Aloe Ridge flats on Sunday (Yesterday), 15 October 2023, in Msunduzi Local Municipality in Umgungundlovu District Municipality.
The Sunday meeting aimed to give updates on the military veterans housing programme in the wake of a court order that military veterans who had invaded the Aloe Ridge flats should vacate the occupied units by December 2023.
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements Inland Region Director Thokozani Magagula, who is also the Department’s designated Military Veterans Programme Champion, also gave a report on housing allocations.
Magagula also stated that more than 127 military veterans have been allocated, which had been approved on the Department of Military Veterans database, and housing specifications are for 50 square-metre and 40 square-metre houses.
These veterans will be allocated to different housing projects. Some projects include uMshwathi Military Veterans Housing Project, Edendale Unit Q Housing Project, Edendale Unit CC, Sinathing Lot 1000 Housing Project and Copesville Military Veterans Housing Project.
The Military Veterans update briefing meeting was also graced by the presence of the Head of Department, Mdu Zungu, Corporate Services Chief Director, Max Mbili, and Chief Opetstions Officet, Thulani Bhengu and Msunduzi Local Municipality Human Settlements official Simphiwr Mbanjwa.
The senior management delegation, accompanied by Departmental officials, engaged with the military veteran’s residents of Aloe Ridge and provided more clarity on the allocation process and who among the military veterans had been eligible to be beneficiaries of the Housing Programme.
Deputy Director-General Bhengu made a point of clarifying that those military veterans who were declined by the system to receive houses will be built houses, but those houses will have a different specification from that which approved military veterans will be receiving.
