Zambia: The President of Malawi, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Lilongwe Bridge. The event was hosted on Wednesday with some other members of the government in attendance at the groundbreaking.
The project is being funded by the Japanese government through the Malawi government. The total contract amount is approximately 37 billion Malawi Kwacha.
Chakwera said that this development will transform the face of Lilongwe City. The construction of the bridge will give the capital city a more modern appearance due to its structure.

The government of Malawi signed a grant agreement for the improvement of Main Roads in Lilongwe City. The agreement includes a 78m long dual carriageway Bridge and a 743m long road pursuant to the MW2063 Development Blueprint.
The project is being helmed in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) designated by the global community. Further the project also aligns with Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS III), 2018, and the Transport Master Plan, 2018.
As per the government of Malawi, these are recent policy documents addressing economic growth and development in the Transport Sector.
The construction of Lilongwe Bridge is part of the project for the improvement of the main roads in Lilongwe city. Once the initiative is complete, it will help ease the transportation of goods and services as well as reduce traffic congestion in the city.
The project is expected to be completed in November 2025.
The ceremony also saw the presence of Vice President Saulos Chilima, Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule, Minister of Transport and Public Works Jacob Hara, Lilongwe Mayor Richard Banda, Japanese Ambassador to Malawi Yoichi Oya, and other government officials.
