South Africa: The Limpopo Provincial Government has recently concluded a successful by-election in one of the municipalities of the province. The administration has congratulated the Limpopo Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for their resounding success.
The Electoral Commission has helped in ensuring that the community can have a peaceful and successful by-election in Thabazimbi Municipality. The elections were held on 04 December 2024 with hundreds of community members of out to vote for their prefered leader.
In an official statement, the provincial government acknowledged that the IEC had worked hard to make sure that the elections can be hosted smoothly. The officials have shared that it is a remarkable feat to manage the elections with 21 political parties in contention.
The provincial government said that they have recieved confirmed reports stating that the organization has ensured that the elections were free and fair.
“We would like to congratulate the IEC for such a sterling job in conducting elections even before the 90-day deadline.” said Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba.
The premier of Limpopo claimed that she is proud of the fact that she will be leading this team of officers in the Municipalities. The premier has further remarked that she will extend all her support to the municipal officers.
The new Council of Thabazimbi Municipality was formally constituted on Thursday. On 12 December 2024, the IEC successfully concluded the election of the Speaker, Mayor and Chief Whip.
This election was hosted after the dissolution of the former Council after the provincial government invoked the provisions of Section 139(1) (c). The invocation was made on 04 October 2024. The elections have helped in reinstating the fact that the people can chose their leaders freely and without external pressures
Premier Dr Ramathuba further stated that the Provincial Government will provide support to the new Council through the Department of Co-Operative Governance, Human Settlements and Provincial Treasury to ensure that it meets its constitutional mandate
