Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) organized school outreach programmes. This will ensure that more and more students are aware of their rights and duties for safe and effective communication.
The students can learn about the various ways in which they can keep themselves safe on the internet. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority also informs the students about where they can seek help can report if any cyber-attack occurs.
Incident Response Officer at Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Ella Hamwaka visited Lilongwe Girls Secondary School. The school was hosting an outreach programme for the girls at the institution.
Hamwaka said that they want to raise awareness all over the country to promote cyber hygiene. This is specially crucially in the event that the officials access to phones but are facing scams and other issues related to money fraud.
“We had a barrier in communicating with people, especially in rural areas so we are making sure to have translators that will be translating in Chichewa as well as other languages and also we are making sure that everyone who is included is aware of the initiatives that MACRA is taking in protecting them,” she said.
Deputy Headteacher for Lilongwe Girls Secondary School Enoch Abraham also appreciated the organization for organizing the outreach programme. The headteacher acknowledged that the school has a lot of young girls who are attracted to the internet nowadays.
“We are going to work with our students in monitoring how they use the internet and reminding them of the most important things that they need to do when they are using the internet and even encouraging them to report to authorities once they detect that there is a danger when they are using the internet,” said Abraham.
A student at the school Roselyn Tambala also shared her views on the issue. She said that since they are growing in a digital world knowledge about social security was highly crucial.
“This will help us as young people to be alert when using the internet,” she said.
