Mauritius: The Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram embarked on a site visit. The visit aimed to check the completion of the Phase 1 water pipe replacement project.
The water project is currently ongoing in the region known as “Quartier”, in Mahebourg. Meanwhile, the site visit was conducted on Wednesday, Wednesday. The government of Mauritius shared the glimpses of the site visit on their social media.
The Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development was accompanying several important government members to the site visit. Some of the principal officials in the list included:
- The Deputy Chairperson of Committees and Chief Government Whip, Mr Rameswar Doolub;
- The General Manager of the Central Water Authority (CWA), Mr Ramprakash Maunthrooa
- Further, many other personalities and government officials were also present at the site project.
Meanwhile, the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development delivered a brief address at the event. Minister Hurreeram called the “Quartier” region a ‘black spot’ because it is a water-stressed area.
Notably, people of the region have to depend on CWA mobile tanker service for their daily supply of potable water. The issue emerges majorly due to the obsolete pipes in the region.
The government has taken it upon themselves to address the situation and started pipe-laying works. The officials have shared that the pipe laying work started in December 2023 and has been successfully executed
Due to the development, the residents of the “Quartier” region can access 24/7 water supply. Further, the Minister also shared an update about phase 2 of the pipe laying project.
The project will start on the main road of Mahebourg and Ville Noire. He said that by extending the replacement of the water pipe project to cover the whole country the government wants to improve the quality of the water supply and the life of Mauritians.
In line with this mandate, the Minister expressed his gratitude to the CWA for their support in this endeavor.
Deputy Chairperson of Committees and Chief Government Whip, Rameswar Doolub who was also present at the site shared his remarks. He emphasized that the replacement of kilometers of pipes project will relieve many households in the region.
The officials have shared that the project is worth more than Rs 300 million. The official believes that it will help families struggling with water scarcity problems.
Meanwhile, he called on the continued collaboration and comprehension of the inhabitants.
The General Manager of the Central Water Authority (CWA), Ramprakash Maunthrooa shared further details about the project during the site visit. He informed the people that the pipe replacement project is being implemented phase-wise at the national level.
Some 25 kilometers of pipes will be replaced in Mahebourg and the peripheral regions. Meanwhile and around five kilometres of pipes have already been replaced in the region of Blue Bay.
The completed project covers an estimated 7,500 residential and commercial spaces, he pointed out.
Once commissioned there will not be water leakage in the region for the next 60 to 75 years. Accordingly, the project is guaranteeing continued water supply to more households.
In some regions, the assistance of Small and Medium Enterprises contractors is also being sought for the project.
