Malawi: Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) has appreciated the government of Malawi for recruiting and promoting 9,753 teachers. The authorities believe that the initiative will help in improving the quality of education for the students of Malawi.

The education stakeholders of the country are extremely excited about the initiative that the government has taken. CSEC Executive Director, Benedicto Kondowe claimed that the move will significantly contribute to positive strides towards the improvement of education standards.

“The infusion of 9,753 educators, alongside promotions, reflects a steadfast commitment to addressing the critical shortage of teachers nationwide. It is essential for nurturing academic excellence and fostering effective teaching and learning environments”, he said.

The Executive director of the CSEC further shared advice to develop the education sector of the country. His organization believes that the administration must constantly continue the recruitment process.

The recruitment will ensure equitable distribution of teachers and a strategic review of resource allocation between training and employment. This must be done to ensure that every student receives the guidance they need to unlock their full potential.

Ministry of Education Public Relations Officer, Mphatso Nkuonera also shared his views on the situation. He claimed that hiring and promotion of teachers will narrow down to a proper teacher-student ratio in secondary schools.

In secondary school, a teacher is supposed to handle 40 students per class. But due to an insufficient number of teachers, sometimes the ratio goes to 50 students. This is not a recommended standard according to the administration of the country.

“Government saw the need and decided to recruit a huge number of teachers to cover the gap.”

Nkuonera pointed out that the government promoted teachers as a way of motivating them. Through the initiative, the government wants to encourage them to work hard and improve service delivery.

Glory Kamwela, a teacher at Mnjiri Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba said work promotion is a motivation. Further, recruiting new teachers minimizes workload in schools thereby increasing performance quality.

Ministry of Education recruited and promoted 9,753 secondary school teachers. Of this number, 2,681 have been recruited and 2,259 promoted at TI and TJ grades. Meanwhile, 3,997 teachers have been promoted to senior teachers, grade TH.

316 teachers have been promoted to the position of heads of department which is grade TG and 500 teachers as head teachers (grade TG).
