Malawi: Officials at the Chitedze Research Station in Lilongwe have expressed their concern about the cutting down of trees. Head of the Chitedze Research Station in Lilongwe, Lawrence Pungulani, complained that the cutting down of the trees is interfering with other research projects in the area.
The research station authorities are disappointed over the situation as Chitedze is a protected area of Malawi, where cutting down of trees is restricted. The head of research at Chitedze Research Station, Lawrence Pungulani, reported the occurrence in Chitedze in Lilongwe.
At the time, he was planting tree seedlings in the region. The research centre officials have extended their support to the tree planting season of the country. According to Pungulani, during this event, more than 20,000 tree seedlings were planted.
The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, has recently launched the Tree Plantation season of the country. The launch for the event was hosted in the Mpasa Hill in Phalombe district on January 19. The event was hosted in the Mpasa Ccap Primary School.
The Head of the research centre, Lawrence Pungulani, believes that the annual forestry season should encourage people to plant more trees.
“People living around protected areas should be properly informed about tree management so that they can take part in restoring the natural environment of the area,” Pungulani said.
The director of research at the Ministry of Agriculture, Grace Kaudzu also took the opportunity to deliver brief remarks at the event. She encouraged Malawians to take part in planting trees in protected areas. She talked about the significant benefits of tree planting, ranging from climate crisis management to a better environment.
Meanwhile Mfumu Chalenga, said that he now has a great responsibility to educate his people and the surrounding areas about the benefits of taking care of trees.
