Malawi: The Malawi Red Cross Society has been continuously working to provide help to the people affected by flash floods and crop failure in Nkhotakota. Strong winds and flash floods have been affecting large areas of Malawi’s central and northern regions.

The situation has led to over 600 hectares of crops being destroyed in the NKhotakota district. The situation can contribute to the widespread of food insecurity in the district. Accordingly, Malawi Red Cross Society has started making efforts in assisting the affected area.

The humanitarian organization has extended their support to 2 thousand households with various home items after the flash floods. These households are also being accommodated in camps.

The humanitarian organization has been working hard to provide assistance to the people throughout the wet season. MRCS has developed their disaster response capacity to help the various communities in time of need.

The officials have already started working on providing various interventions as part of responding to disasters in several districts. that have been affected by some flash floods and strong winds in the central and northern regions.

The Malawi Red Cross Society has started the drone mapping initiative to get a more detailed overview of the situation in Nkhotakota district. The drone mapping exercise is being conducted by the Malawi Red Cross Society in collaboration with several partners.

The aim of the initiative is to establish how much fields have been washed away and food insecure families there would be. As per the most recent updates, over 600+hectares of farmland has been damaged with majority of these being rice fields.

In response to the reports, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have also joined the cause. The IFRC has approved over 800  million kwacha disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF). The fund is designed to help Malawi Red Cross reach out to the affected households with Humanitarian Aid.
