Malawi: Police in Mangochi district have urged the people of the community traveling to the lake district for Mothers Day holiday to remain safe. They have been urged to take all the necessary precautions and to adhere to safety measures when visiting beaches.

The country is gearing up to honor the mothers and mother figures through special traditional celebrations. Some of the traditional celebrations will also be hosted at the beach, which makes the call for caution important.

The Mother’s day celebration will take place on Tuesday, with several members of the community travelling to the seaside. Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer, Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi has come forward with the concern.

She spoke to the media regarding spreading awareness among the general public. Daudi urged the public to prioritise road safety such as avoiding speeding, wearing seat belts, refraining from driving under influence of alcohol when traveling to and from Mangochi.

The precautions will not only save the life of the drivers but also protect other road users from potential harm. The official came forward with an appeal to people travelling to and from the district to adhere to vehicle capacity limits.

They were also asked to ensure that their vehicles are capable of using roadworthy vehicles to prevent accidents. The officials have shared that due to high water levels on Lake Malawi, celebrants must wear life jackets when cruising on the lake.

The people are urged to abstain from swimming while drunk and during odd hours to prevent drowning.

“Resort owners are reminded not to allow intoxicated individuals into the water and to provide stewards (rescue teams) for immediate assistance.

“Hotel and lodge owners are requested to maintain guest records to prevent criminals from posing as clients during the holiday,” she said.

Daudi said police will strengthen security in the district as they will carry intensive day and night patrols, intelligence driven operations and snap roadblocks to prevent criminal activities.

“Traffic police officers are diligently enforcing traffic laws on all roads in the Mangochi district and road users are urged to comply with the law,” she said.
