Mauritius Prison Service (MPS) organized a passing out parade ceremony for graduated trainees of the force on Monday

Mauritius Prison Service (MPS) organized a passing out parade ceremony for graduated trainees of the force. The event was held on Monday morning at the Prison Training School in Beau-Bassin.

80 Trainee Prison Officers were enlisted into the Police Force of Mauritius. The event was attended by a number of high ranking officials in the Mauritius Police Force in support of the new officers.

The Commissioner of Prisons, Jaganaden Rungadoo delivered a brief address at the ceremony. Rungadoo stated that he considered this as an important milestone which was celebrated with the passing out parade. The 80 Trainee Prison Officers will be serving into the ranks of the Mauritius Prison Service.

He applauded the Officers for their determination and commitment throughout their rigorous training. The initiative has prepared them for the realities of their vital role in society.

Commissioner of Prisons further reminded them that they are not merely enforcers of the law, but agents of change, tasked with the rehabilitation of detainees and the protection of society.

The commissioner of Prisons reflected on the duties of the new recruits after their graduation from the training. Rungadoo urged the new recruits to uphold the three guiding principles throughout their services. These principles are professionalism, compassion, and resilience.

The Commissioner of Prisons discussed how teamwork and mutual support among the recruits is important for their success. The officials have shared that collaboration is also important for the safety and success in their roles.

Moreover, he also highlighted that the training that the recruits were put under was very thorough. The training includes collaboration with the police and GIPM. He highlighted that the recruits are ready both physically and mentally to face future challenges.

During the proceedings, the Commissioner of Prisons presented awards to four outstanding trainee officers:

  • Jangi Pravindev was honoured as the Best All-Round Trainee Prison Officer and awarded the Baton of Honour
  • Gopaul Yanishta and Louise Emmanuel Guillaume Isaac were recognised as the Second and Third Best Trainee Officers, respectively.
  • Ramasawmy Perouven was acknowledged as the Best Athlete.

The event also included a dog show, demonstrations by the Trainee Officers in tonfa and self-defence techniques. The Prison Marching Band also honored the event with a performance.
