Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis honours families of Beacon Valley with ‘Title Deeds’

Cape Town: Mayor of the town Geordin Hill-Lewis has delivered the title deeds to the families of Beacon Valley and has marked the life-changing moment for the residents. It is a part of the commitment made by the City of Cape Town to empower through home ownership and redress.

Reportedly, residents of Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain were overjoyed to receive the title deeds and confirmed their home ownership status on May 14, 2024. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements Councillor – Carl Pophaim, delivered the title deeds to the beneficiaries right on their doorstep.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said that delivering title deeds to Beacon Valley families right on their doorstep was a truly special moment. “This is more than just a piece of paper, it is a life-changing document for future generations that represented both home and economic asset,” added the mayor.

The families have received their title deeds that have represented the thousands of the beneficiaries who will receive their title deeds over the coming months.

Mayor added further, “Creating new homeowners is our passion, we take pride in ensuring that families benefitted from the state-subsidised housing that get their title deeds in good time.”

“We are also investing in more resources to help resolve the historical title deed issues and restore home ownership to the rightful beneficiaries. We further passed a new ‘No Cost Transfer’ policy, last year, to enable tenants of council a rental housing to become homeowners without any cost burden,” said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

Councillor Carl Pophaim said that the city is working hard to drive the empowerment that comes with property ownership and the title deeds programme, which is an effective tool for redress. The No-Cost Transfer policy has enabled qualifying beneficiaries to take ownership of their own homes at no cost in 2023, and we have been making tremendous strides with this unique programme.

“It is what delivery is about and we will be making it our mission to create dignity in the communities through every single title deed that we deliver,” said the councillor.

Human Settlements Directorate of the city is gearing up to build on the success of the Festive Deeds challenge in 2023, where they delivered over 1,000 title deeds to beneficiaries across the city in the coming months.

It is the time when the officials are aiming to deliver many more title deeds to beneficiaries across the city over the next few months.

“We are thrilled to continue to help more residents in becoming homeowners and I always enjoy celebrating the title deeds beneficiaries and their families,” said Councillor Pophaim. He cleared that a home and title deed mean opportunities and stability for the whole family and for many future generations.
