Zambia: The District Commissioner of Choma Gamela Sikaleya has announced that the government has taken the initiative to find a solution for the shortage of Mealie Meals. The officials have shared that the district has a severe shortage of commodities.
For this reason, the administration has taken the opportunity to start the production of the Eagle Mealie meal brand. The officials have shared that the through Choma Milling Company to cover up the shortage of the commodity.
The people of the country have been lining up to get access to government-subsidized mealie meal plans. They have shared that the meals are one of the major initiatives to fight the country’s food shortages.
The District Commissioner of Choma spoke to the media regarding the government’s initiative to support the population of the district. The vulnerable families are heavily dependent on the efforts of the government to fight the food shortage.
The District Commissioner said that the government has almost finalized the contract with the Milling company. He further noted that they have already delivered 40,000 bags of White Maize and other branded materials to the plant.
He understands the critical role that mealie meals play in ensuring food security within the district. He hopes that the government’s initiative will help ensure sufficient amounts of staple food for the families.
Further, he also wants to reduce the queues that form up in shops when individuals want to purchase the mealie meal brand.
Meanwhile, Charles Muchimba, a resident of Choma`s Siatembo Area, has expressed his delight regarding the government initiative. He is happy that the administration is making efforts to begin producing the Eagle-branded Mealie meal locally.
He notes that currently, those in remote places incur extra travel costs in traveling to Choma town to access the government produced mealie meal which is the cheapest brand on the market.
Meanwhile, inside sources at Choma Milling Plant have told the media that the Company has run out of Maize to produce its own Mealie meal, hence the partnership with the government.
