Botswana: The Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education Nono Kgafela Mokoka has applauded Mochudi Resource Centre for the Blind. The remarks were made during the international commemoration of the International day of People Living with disabilities.
The organization, according to the Minister, boasts of a sterling record in the promotion of education of children with visual challenges in Botswana.
The Minister made these remarks at the occasion of the Mochudi Resource Centre for the Visual Impaired Open Day. The initiative was organized in Mochudi on 3rd December 2024 with several stakeholders in attendance.
The Minister said the Resource Centre is responsible for providing specialized education, resources. The aim of the center is to support to children with visual impairment contribute to the overall empowerment of communities.
She said the institution in a way supports the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that all children regardless of their physical or intellectual challenges are afforded the opportunity to receive quality education.
Minister talked to the staff members of the Mochudi Resource Centre for the Blind during the open day. She highlighted that they have to work towards promoting a sense of inclusivity in education.
The Minister has made the call for more resources, more trained personnel and more opportunities for learners with disabilities. She has also reiterated on the importance of teachers and the role they play in the academic, social and emotional development of children living with disabilities.
According to the Minister, the teacher training must be prioritized to ensure that educators have a deep understanding of different types of children living with disabilities and strategies that will help children succeed in the classroom.
Mochudi Resource Centre for the Blind is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that offer residential, rehabilitation and pre –school services for children living with visual challenges. The institution hosted the Open Day event to bid farewell to the Standard 7 class of 2024 and also to celebrate the graduation of their pre-school leavers.
