Malawi: The Ministry of Mining, through their Institutional Integrity Committee (IIC), held a staff awareness and corruption prevention policy consultation meeting. The meeting was hosted in collaboration with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on 22nd January 2024.

The aim of the consultation meeting was to ensure that they had as many views as possible from the Ministry of Mining officers. The suggestions from the stakeholders will be invaluable for the implementation of the Corruption Prevention Policy that the ministry is developing.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry, Dr Joseph Mkandawire, said sensitising members of staff on issues of corruption is very important. The education of the stakeholders will be critical towards the development of understanding of how the vice can manifest.

Further, the initiative will also help the officials of the Ministry on how it can be avoided. He added that consultations will promote ownership of the policy document, which the Ministry intends to develop through the IIC.

He appealed to the staff to take the consultations seriously, as corruption is cancer that can kill the Ministry if left unchecked.

“We are here to contribute towards the formulation of our policy. As we make contributions, let us align it to what we do in our Ministry and consider the fact that all departments in the Ministry are prone to corruption,” he said.

The various stakeholders, who were representing the from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) took advantage of the consultations to orient the staff on the role of the Ministry in the fight against corruption.

National Anti-Corruption Strategy II (NACS II) entails that all MDAs should have Integrity Committees to foster and champion integrity within institutions.

Chair of the Ministry of Mining IIC Stanley Nyama said his committee is committed to holding more interactive meetings with the staff to promote integrity in the Ministry.

The people of Malawi applauded the government’s efforts to ensure that they take a dedicated stance against corruption in the country.
