Mokgweetsi Masisi concludes visit to Zambia, signs 10 MoU

The President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi has successfully concluded his two-day work visit to Zambia and signed several MoU.

Botswana: The President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi has successfully concluded his two-day work visit to Zambia. Masisi was invited to the event by his Zambian counterpart. The aim of the two-day meeting was to promote the bilateral relations between the two nations.

President Masisi has been working diligently to strengthen the international relations of Botswana with the rest of the world. Before the two-day visit to Zambia, President Masisi was hosting the Prime Minister of Bahamas.

Prime Minister Philip Davis was visiting the country with a delegation of ministers and high level government officials. The six-day visit of the Bahamian leader led to strengthening of the two nations’ diplomatic ties.

President Mokgweetsi Masisi sought to replicate the success for the Zambian trip as well. He was welcomed warmly by the President of Zambia in Livingstone. While in Zambia, President Masisi discussed several issues of mutual importance for the nations.

Ten Memoranda of Understanding have been signed between Botswana and Zambia to formalize their collaboration. The leadership of the nations are extremely happy with the development.

They have pledged to collaborate with each other for the development of not only their countries but also the African region.

These agreements cover a wide range of sectors, including Science and Technology, Mining, Railway Transport, Minerals and Value Chain Development, Agriculture and Livestock, the Establishment of the Kazungula Bridge Authority (KBA),  and Political Consultations, among others.

The Memoranda of Understanding which were signed between the two nations are detailed below:

  • Establishment of the Bi-National Commission (BNC). The aim of the commission is to elevate the bilateral cooperation framework between the two countries. With the new development, Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC) and Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS) has been upgraded to a BNC.
  • Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations.
  • Agreement establishing the Kazungula Bridge Authority (KBA). Further, the two nations agreed to establish Addendum No.2 to the Agreement. The aim of the agreement was to Sponsor the Construction and Operation of the Kazungula Bridge.
  • Sponsors Agreement for the bankable feasibility study and the construction of the railway infrastructure for the railway link from Mosetse in Botswana to Livingstone in Zambia through the Kazungula Bridge.
  • Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Livestock, Agriculture and Aquaculture.
  • Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Crop Production.
  • Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Science and Technology.
  • Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Geo-Science, Mining, Minerals and Value Chain Development.
  • Memorandum of Understanding between the Zambia Development Agency and Botswana Investment and Trade Centre.
