Malawi: Mother and Daughter hailing from the Perete Village in Mzimba have drowned to death in Msusu River. The incident happened on Sunday, January 28 after the six year old went swimming in the river with her friends.
The mother of the young girl tried to save her daughter from drowning. However, she was unsuccessful in her attempt and instead drowned to her death. The two victims have been identified as 24-year-old Matrida Mwale and 6-year-old Grace Mbewe.
Both the victims drowned in the Msusu River in the district. The police force has confirmed the incident in a press statement. The unfortunate development was reported to the Jenda Police Station on Sunday.
The officials started the investigation promptly and interviewed some of the witnesses to get the crucial details of the incident.
The incident happened on Sunday when the six-year-old Mbewe, along with her two friends, went to the river for a swim. “In the course of swimming, she went to the deep side of the river and failed to swim back.
This resulted in her tragic drowning. The information was relayed by Macfarlane Mseteka, Public Relations Officer for Jenda Police Station.
Further, the official stated that the two friends who accompanied the deceased ran to the village and informed the mother.
Without hesitation, the mother rushed into the river to rescue her daughter but, she too succumbed to the river’s current
People in the village managed to retrieve both the mother and the daughter and they were quickly taken to Emfeni Health Centre. However, they were pronounced dead upon arrival at the healthcare facility.
Meanwhile, police have advised people to seek the services of experienced/professional swimmers in rescue missions at the Msusu River. The people of the district have taken to their social media to extend their condolences on the death of the mother and daughter.
