Malawi: The Malawi Consulate in Tete Province Mozambique has applauded the government of the country for the suspension of Mozambican Police Officers. The said officers were suspected of assaulting a Malawian truck driver, Elastine Ngonyani.

Last month, a video clip went viral showing two Mozambican police officers brutally assaulting Ngonyani. The video left the people of the country angered at the actions of the police officers involved in the incident.

The social media was filled with sympathetic messages for the victim of the incident. Meanwhile some officials of Mozambique have expressed their disappointment over the incident and shared their regrets

The officials shared their remarks at the recent joint technical meeting between Malawi and Mozambique on boarder re-affirmation in Mangochi. The Mozambican leader of delegation Armando Chavana expressed regret over the incident.

The officials shared that they have suspended the officials to pave way for investigations, according to Chavana.

“As Malawi Consulate we are very happy that Mozambique government has actually accepted and managed to condemn the behaviour of the police officers,” Happy Saka, Malawi’s Consular General in Tete Province, said.

He added that the Mozambique government has promised that they will ensure that the investigations are conducted without any interference. The police officials who were responsible for the assault of Elastine Ngonyani will get the justice for their actions.

Meanwhile, the people of the country have also shared their opinions about the incident. Some people of the country believe that Mozambican police officers take undue advantage of their power.

One of the social media users said: Police brutality is a profitable business that has pulled many Mozambican police officers out of poverty. They use arbitrary force to fish money out of the pockets of Malawian drivers.

Malawi government should negotiate with its Mozambican counterpart before this sinister situation gets out of control. Some other users shared that the Mozambican police officers are extremely cruel to people.
