Multi-Million rand water refurbishment project launches at Emadlangeni Local Municipality

South Africa: A multi-million-rand water project aimed at addressing the continuous issue of water interruptions at Emadlangeni Local Municipality was launched on 05 January 2023 by the Honourable Mayor Cllr uMtwana Ndabuko Zulu and the Mayor of Emadlangeni, Cllr M.L Buthelezi.

South Africa: A multi-million-rand water project aimed at addressing the continuous issue of water interruptions at Emadlangeni Local Municipality was launched on 05 January 2023 by the Honourable Mayor Cllr uMtwana Ndabuko Zulu and the Mayor of Emadlangeni, Cllr M.L Buthelezi.

The refurbishment of the Utrecht water plant will be done in two phases and will see the communities of Utrecht relieved from water interruptions caused by water production failures and ensure improved water quality is delivered to homes in areas in Utrecht town and surrounding areas.

Until now, there have been challenges in running water and residents have in the past protested and resorted to illegal connections.


 

 


The Honourable Mayor, together with the multi-party leadership of Amajuba District Municipality, presented the Consultant and Contractor that have been appointed to perform the refurbishment of the Utrecht Water Treatment Plant to the community.

In his address to the community, the Mayor alluded, “the current water plant is old and requires extensive refurbishment to the existing building structures, mechanical & electrical components and operators’ facilities; most of the plants will need to be refurbished or completely replaced.”

In addition, employment opportunities will be created for residents of Emadlangeni during construction as emphasised by the Deputy Mayor Cllr S.Sizani .” This project is intended to uplift the local community of Emadlangeni; it is also important to mention that the scope for local sub-contractors will be advertised, and those suitable should be considered as part of our Local Economic Development strategy.”

On the same day, Amajuba District Municipality Council, the Honourable Mayor Cllr. uMtwana Ndabuko Zulu, together with Speaker of Council Cllr uMtwana S.O Zulu and Cllr S.Sithole yesterday 05 January 2023, paid their respect to the family of Ms Nompumeleo Shezi in Mndozo.

Ms Shezi was one of the 37 victims who sadly lost their lives in the tragic Boksburg gas explosion disaster that occurred on 24 December 2023.

The Mayor will also be attending the funeral service with the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, to support the bereaved family.
