Kenya: Shimoni Port in South Coast of Kenya docked its first-ever cruise vessel ‘MV SH Diana’ and marked a milestone for the recently completed port. It is a luxury cruise liner that is carrying 120 international tourists.
The vessel made her inaugural call voyage to the port where she was warmly received by the port officials, county leaders and tourism stakeholders. The tourists had an opportunity to enjoy a range of renowned Kwale attractions along the South Coast of Kenya, whose beaches have been ranked as the ‘Best in Africa’ for five consecutive years by the World Travel Awards.
Reportedly, these vessels docked included excursions to Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve, Wasini Island and other historical sites along the coastline. The Kwale County Governor – Fatuma Achani, who is officially welcomed the vessel, described its arrival as a turning point for the county’s tourism and economic growth.
Governor Achani said that the docking of the cruise ship in Shimoni marks a sihnificant boost to the local economy, as it opens access for tourists to explore the diverse attractions. This milestone elevates profile of Kwale in the global tourism arena, with Shimoni Port by emerging it as a gateway to world-class coastal experiences.
MP of Lunga Lunga – Chiforomodo Mangale echoed the sentiments of Governor and noted that the arrival of the cruise ship was a major boost to the local economy.
Acting Manager Corporate Communication – Jones Buchere underscored its relevance to National Growth, he represented the Managing Director – Captain William Ruto who applauded the milestone docking of the vessel and highlighted the strategic importance of Shimoni Port.
Jone Buchere noted that this marked the third visit by the cruise liner to the Coast region and followed previous calls in 2023 and 2024.
Notably, MV SH Diana has become a regular caller to the coast of Kenya, making annual visits to the Ports of Mombasa and Lamu. This marked her first call to Shimoni, by enhancing the profile of the South Coast as a cruise tourism destination.
The Key players in the tourism industry, included representatives from the County Government of Kwale, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and other government agencies, who attended the welcoming ceremony.
