Nigeria: Lagos submerges in water, after heavy rainfall

Nigeria: Lagos have received heavy rainfall early morning on Wednesday, July 03, 2024. After the rainfall the capital is flooded with the usual situation.

Reportedly, the rain poured for many considerable hours that eventually resulted in flooding in residential areas of Ibeju-Lekki and other strategic locations.

As per the sources, some of the areas of the city which were highly affected from the rain were Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Abijon, Sangotedo, Awoyaya and Ibeju-Lekki.

According to the narratives recorded in the report, some of the residents attributed the flood to the blockage of waterways, due to indiscriminate dumping of waste materials in and nearby localities.

One of the residents living in the Labora area of Ibeju-Lekki said that his house was completely submerged and almost drowned in water due to lack of a functional drainage system in the new site, where he lives. He said that water filled his home and destroyed some of his belongings which were very important.

While narrating his verse he said, “There is too much water flowing into my compound, the entire house is submerged. I live at a new place now where there is no drainage, due which the water run into residential homes, rendering us homeless because we can’t sleep inside the water.”

Another resident described regarding the perennial flooding in Ibeju-Lekki Expressway. He said that due to the blockage of drains in the metropolis, the water has stuck and not founding it’s to get drained. The person requested to Ibeju-Lekki Local Government to clear drains and urged residents to desist from excessive dumping of waste in drainage to control floods.

He also reached out to the Government of Lagos State to speed up the completion of road repairs in Sangotedo area of Ibeju.

Another person explained the condition of Labora area which is badly affected with the downpour and flooding. The person expressed, “I live in Labora but during the rainy season I do relocate with my family to my younger sister’s house in the Eputu area. Flood has taken my house due to lack of drainage in the environment.”

Adding further to her statement she said, “So many areas in the metropolis are also affected by flooding.” She urged that the government should find a lasting solution to this perennial flooding challenge.

Notably, the floods have also affected some roads and Metropolis areas in Ibeju-Lekki dur to the ongoing rehabilitation road works in the localities.
