Mauritius: A delegation of the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC), in Rodrigues since 06 March 2023, kick-started a series of consultations to compile the necessary data for the elaboration of a new strategic plan aiming to increase productivity and competitiveness on the island.

The NPCC delegation comprises the Chairman of the NPCC Board, Mr Sujoy Busgeeth, the Executive Director of the NPCC, Mr Ashit Gungah, the Director of Operations, Mr Dev Appalswamy, and the Head of the Research Department, Ms Hemlata Ramsohok Jomadar.

During its visit, the NPCC delegation will have working sessions with several stakeholders, including representatives of the public and private sectors, trade unions, and non-governmental organisations in Rodrigues. Stakeholders will be encouraged to find ways to effectively implement the actions of the new strategic plan. The renewal of Productivity Committee in Rodrigues will be tasked with designing and implementing projects aimed at increasing productivity in several sectors. An awareness session on green productivity with tourism operators is also on the agenda.

Moreover, meetings have also been scheduled between the NPCC delegation and the administrative leaders of Rodrigues to understand the issues related to productivity and to discuss avenues of collaboration in the field of training and staff development. As such, on 06 March 2023, the delegation met with the Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues, Mr Johnson Roussety, who reiterated his commitment and support in the process of improving productivity in Rodrigues.

According to the NPCC Executive Director, there is a need for a strategic plan specific to Rodrigues as the island is an integral part of the Republic of Mauritius, despite being managed independently. He highlighted that it was high time to review the strategy for Rodrigues, whose economy is based on pillars such as agriculture and entrepreneurship. Through this new strategic plan, he underscored, the NPCC calls for an improvement in productivity among the economic operators of Rodrigues so that they can increase their performance and growth.

Mr Gungah also pointed out that this new strategic plan will lay greater emphasis on the notion of excellence and that Rodriguan stakeholders will be called upon to adopt modern practices allowing better management of resources as well as clean and healthy production.

It is recalled that the latest strategic plan on productivity for Rodrigues, entitled ‘Strategic Plan to Enhance Productivity and Competitiveness in the Island of Rodrigues 2016-2020’, was developed and launched by the NPCC in 2017.
