Zambia: The authorities of Chikankata District have denied to renew the National Registration Card –NRC of a 31 year old woman. The woman is a resident of the Manyonyo Area in Chikankata District of Southern Province.

Allegedly, the woman did not remember her NRC number which led the authorities to deny her request of renewing the registeration. The woman has been identified as Ritah Cheelo. According to the woman, her NRC was lost in February 2024.

She wanted to replace the lost NRC when she was sent away from the office for not remembering the details needed for replacing. She has reached out to the media to share her ordeal and specified that the officers were not cooperative with her.

According to the woman, one of the officers at the National Registration Office in Mazabuka told her that she will only replace her NRC after 15 years because of failure to remember her NRC number. She further noted that she had been to the office to get the document several times.

She spent a lot of her money to go to the office and come back dissatisfied with the response of the officers. She and her parents did not find the officers helpful till the aforementioned officer informed her that the document will be replaced after 15 years.

She has expressed her disappointment over the issue and called on the administration to intervene and help her. The 31 year old has claimed that  she needs her NRC as it is an important national document.

Meanwhile, the woman’s Father, Douglas Cheelo says the matter was reported to the District Commissioner’s office. The District Commissioner has assured them that the government will support them but to date nothing has happened.

He claims that they recently visited DC’s office to follow up on the issue. At this point they were informed that the matter was resolved contrary to what happened when they reached the NRC’s office.

The media has since reached out to the officer, Oliver Mulomba for comment. He expressed displeasure over the conduct of the officer from the Department of District National Registration office.

Mulomba said the Chikankata District NRC office supervisor should explain to his office why the known officer spoke in that manner to the client and sent her away.
