Malawi: A 42 years old medical officer at Nsanje District Health Office, Ian Kalonga died in a motorcycle accident. The accident happened in the night hours of Tuesday while he was riding in his vehicle which does not have a registration number.
The accident was reported to the Nsanje Police Station by some of the passing road users who had seen the victim. Nsanje Police, Public Relation Officer, Agness Zalakoma confirmed the incident with the members of the media.
The accident became a cause of concern for the law enforcement agencies within the district. The Police and healthcare stakeholders of the district have urged road users to remain cautious.
The Police Public Relations Officer said Kalonga was riding an unregistered Lifo motorcycle. At the time of the accident, the health officer has been heading to Nthukuso Village along the earth road in the district.
“Riding towards Agriculture houses, he lost control and swerved to the extreme nearside where he hit a tree and sustained severe head injuries,” she said, adding that the motorcycle had its front part extensively damaged.

Director of Health and Social Services in Nsanje Dr. Gilbert Chapweteka said Kalonga’s death will affect heath service delivery in the district.
“He was an In-charge at Mbenje Health Centre and was a hard worker. His untimely death has left a big gap in the district’s health sector,” added Chapweteka.
Kalonga came from Nasanya Village, Traditional Authority Nchiramwera in Thyolo District.
Meanwhile police in Nsanje have appealed to motorists to adhere to road safety regulations to avoid such kind of accidents.
The officials who worked in the district health office with the victim, extended their condolences in the death of the victim. The health officers have expressed their concern on the increasing the number of accidents in the district.
