Malawi: Police in Phalombe are keeping in custody a new mother for hiding the birth of her child. The culprit has been identified as 28-year-old, Gertrude Nyambo.
She has allegedly concealed the birth of her child who was later found lifeless and floating in stagnant water under a bridge. The child was found by a some students who were going to school.
The students reported the incident to the members of the Police Service. The officers have shared that the body of the infant was dumped by the mother who reported that her boyfriend and the baby’s biological father had denied taking responsibility for the child.
Phalombe Police Station, Spokesperson, Sergeant, Jimmy Kapanje has confirmed the report of the incident. The officer confirmed to the media that learners who were going to Chilayeni Primary School, saw a lifeless body floating on stagnant water.
The students who saw the body reported the matter to the school authorities. The authorities later went to the police station to file an official report.
Police accompanied by medical personnel, rushed to the scene of the crime and conducted the preliminary investigation into the matter. It was confirmed that the infant was approximately one day old and had died from suffocation after he had been abandoned
After the first round of investigations, police arrested the mother of the infant. Nyambo has since admitted to having dumped the newlyborn baby after a boyfriend denies responsibility for the pregnancy.
“During interrogation, the suspect admitted to having given birth to a child and dumped it under the bridge after her boyfriend denied responsibility for the pregnancy,” said Kapanja.
Nyambo is a resident of the Nyambalo Village, Traditional Authority Mkhumba in the district. The police has confirmed that the culprit will appear in court soon.
The members of the public have also come forward to express their concern on the inhuman activities of the culprit. The members of the community have criticized the culprit for her actions.
