St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew addressed the attendees present at the honorary ceremony of the men and women who sacrifices laid the foundation upon which they are standing. The event was organised by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party on May 31, 2026.
The honourees fought for the rights, freedoms and opportunities that the generations enjoy now, long before many of them entered public life. They championed democracy, advanced education, expanded access to healthcare, strengthened workers’ rights, promoted land ownership, established social security and helped in leading the nation on path to Independence.

As they reflected on their legacy, they were reminded that progress is never accidental. It is built through courage, sacrifice, conviction and service.
Story of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party is inseparable from the story of national development and the contributions of the fallen comrades that continue to guide them as they work to build a stronger, more prosperous and more sustainable nation.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew emphasised the historic and enduring significance of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party. He argued that the nation would suffer greatly if the Labour movement were ever removed from its political landscape. He stated that the party has consistently set the standards for political development and social progress in St. Kitts and Nevis, by ensuring that the contributions of its founders and fallen comrades continue to shape the nation.
Dr. Drew highlighted the Labour movement’s central role in establishing democracy in the country. He noted that democratic reforms began in 1932 with the introduction of elected representation and continued in 1952 with the achievement of adult suffrage, allowing ordinary citizens to vote. According to the Prime Minister, these milestones were secured through the efforts of the Labour movement, which were then known as the Workers’ League.
PM Drew reflected on the party’s legacy and said that its leaders fought not only for improved living standards but also for human dignity. Their efforts led to advances in education, healthcare, housing, land ownership, social security and individual freedoms. He further stressed that the Labour Party championed the cause of national independence, making it a driving force behind the country’s journey from democratic reform to sovereign nationhood.
