PM Roosevelt Skerrit calls for strong cooperation at CELAC

Roosevelt Skerrit recently travelled to St Vincent and the Grenadines for the 8th summit of heads of State and Government of CELAC.

Dominica: Roosevelt Skerrit recently travelled to St Vincent and the Grenadines for the 8th summit of heads of State and Government of CELAC on Friday. The Prime Minister joined the other heads of the CELAC to discuss several issues of international importance.

During the summit, the Prime Minister advocated for the increase in regional cooperation through shared infrastructure, integration and knowledge exchange. The Prime Minister urged the other heads of states to come together and take critical steps for international issues.

The issues that were discussed during the one-day summit included climate change. They also discussed that the development of the Small Island developing States. The Prime Minister of the country has shared some glimpses from the one-day summit on his social media.

The one-day event was attended by several prominent heads of the state, including:

  • Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda- Gaston Browne
  • Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley
  • President of the Republic of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali
  • Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew

The Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves was the chairman of the eighth summit of the CELAC. The opening ceremony of the summit was addressed by the President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez.

Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Xiomara Castro, President of the Republic of Honduras, who is the incoming Pro-Tempore President of CELAC also delivered their remarks.

The other attendees at the event included Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres. The attendants of the event discussed several issues, including climate financing and development of the SIDS.

During the event, PM Roosevelt Skerrit was extremely happy to represent Dominica and showcased the efforts of the country in securing climate resilience. The people of the country shared that they were proud of their leader for representing Dominica so well in the regional as well as international arenas.

The CELAC summit aimed to explore measures to strengthen the CELAC and address the sustainable development of the Latin American and Caribbean regions.
