Dominica The Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that he would be discussing the issue of Free Movement in the 48th meeting of the CARICOM Heads of State. The meeting will be hosted from February 19 to February 21.
The CARICOM Heads from various nations will be traveling to Barbados for the meeting whose opening ceremony is scheduled for the afternoon of February 19. The event will be hosted at the Lord Erskine Sandiford Center, Bridgetown.
The CARICOM Heads of States will be discussing several areas of importance during the three days of meetings. The theme of the meeting is “Strength in Unity: Forging Caribbean Resilience, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development.”
Through the meetings, the Prime Minister of Dominica will be reflecting on the issue of regional travel between Caribbean Nations. The programme seeks to bring leaders from across the region together to discuss issues like food and nutrition security.
Climate Change and Climate Financing, which is a major mandate for the leaders of the island nations, will get its due focus during the meeting.
Prime Minister Skerrit’s topic of focus will be free movement, which has been on the agenda of the Dominican Leader for long. He announced that he has been advancing the cause of free movement for all the people of CARICOM.
PM Roosevelt Skerrit hopes that the meeting in Barbados will be fruitful in this regard and get full free movement. He has also clarified that he does not believe free movement will cause the people to flock to one nation or another.
The Prime Minister asserted that this notion is not backed by evidence and thus should not be used to block progress. He claimed that free movement is important to allow all the people in the Caribbean to be able to benefit from talent, opportunity, that the region on the whole can offer.
PM Skerrit noted that free movement is highly convenient for the individuals of the Caribbean and must have the support of everyone.
