Dominica: Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit met with the technical team from the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) on Monday, Dec 01, 2025. The team is in the nature island to have an overview of the commencement of the Northern Road Improvement Project.
The CCCC team also conducted an assessment of the major rehabilitation initiative that are funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China. The rehabilitation initiatives include construction of:
- New bridges and culverts
- Slope-stabilization works
- Road widening, and
- Installation of retaining walls from Portsmouth to Hatton Garden
Recently, PM Skerrit has also announced the plan of the government to rehabilitate the road. This project follows a commitment made by the President Xi Jinping during the official visit of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to China, last year.
According to PM Skerrit, such meetings with the president of China and with the premier of China held discussions, where there was an agreement for the Chinese government (by way of a grant) to rehabilitate this road.
Dr. Skerrit further explained that the Chinese government has already engaged with a design team for the major project. He said that the team will first do some study and will collect all the data and information that are all relevant towards the design of the roads.
The Prime Minister visited the site with Chinese ambassador to Dominica – Chu Maoming, who is also the head of the technical team to review and finalise the designs, etc.
Ambassador Chu Maoming said that this assessment is the first step in the rehabilitation of the road. He highlighted that this is a consensus that has been reached by the leaders of the two countries, and the embassy is definitely making efforts to implement the consensus, and this is their first step towards this.
Chu stated that this is the initial stage and being the technical people, they will do a lot of studies and consultations first. Ambassador Maoming is confident that the technical preparatory team will do a very good study and will bring up with a good outcome.
