Dominica observed official ceremony for the Commissioning of the Trafalgar Basketball Facility in Roseau Valley on Jan 30, 2026. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit emphasised about the wellness, community ownership, development and importance of this upgradation.
Reportedly, PM Skerrit has officially commissioned the upgraded Trafalgar Basketball Facility and described it as a significant investment in developing youth, community wellness and contributing towards national progress. The ceremony further earmarked the formal handover of the facility to the residents of Trafalgar and the wider Roseau Valley.
Major Investment in Youth, Sports and Wellness
In his address, PM Skerrit underlined the strong commitment of the government to develop youth and sports across Dominica. He highlighted that this upgraded basketball court is a major improvement which will be useful for all.
He encouraged people to consider this facility as a space for regular physical activity to promote both physical and mental well-being. He explained this by managing non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
Dr. Skerrit urged kids, adults and seniors to adopt healthier lifestyle through active use of the facility.
Community Ownership and Responsible Use
Prime Minister Skerrit stressed that, the government only delivers the infrastructure, its longevity depends on community ownership and how they take care of it. He noted that damage to public facilities diverts scarce resources from further development.
He requested the village council, sports groups and residents to collectively manage and protect the court. He also asked them to ensure that it remains a lasting asset for current and future generations.
PM Skerrit expressed optimism that Trafalgar will be known historically for its strong basketball tradition. Residents are allowed to utilise the facility unlike elsewhere, where upgraded infrastructure remained underused.
Development Impact in Roseau Valley
During his addressal, Prime Minister Skerrit placed the project within the wider development agenda, he outlined this major investment which will benefit Roseau Valley.
He mentioned that Roseau Valley is progressing with geothermal power plant energy, tourism initiatives, housing development and construction of cable car project.
He clarified that these projects are expected to stimulate economic activity, create jobs and increase income circulation within the community. He also assured residents that roads affected by geothermal works will be resurfaced completely this year.
The ceremony concluded with a blessing of the facility, expressions of gratitude to partners including the Caribbean Development Bank and the Basic Needs Trust Fund. He called for residents to actively use the court as a symbol of shared responsibility and community pride.
