Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit visited the Geothermal Power Plant project site in Laudat to overview the progress towards clean energy future of the Nature Island. He confirmed the commission of its groundbreaking 10 MW plant in the Roseau Valley by February 2026.
Commissioning of the 10-megawatt Geothermal Power Plant is a milestone that will position the country as a leader in renewable energy within the Caribbean. Dominica anticipates delivering clean and reliable energy to the national grid by March 2026.
Currently, Dominica imports over 90% of its energy in the form of diesel by exposing the island to high cost and supply volatility.
With the implementation of the Geothermal Energy, Dominica aims to stabilise the:
- Electricity prices
- Cut carbon emissions
- Enhance resilience against climate related disruptions
The Geothermal Power Plant is constructed with an aim to create jobs, boost procurement opportunities and generate long-term socio-economic benefits for communities in Laudat, Wotten Waven, Trafalgar and Dominica.
Reportedly, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit visited the site on Tuesday, Dec 02, 2025 along with the members of Cabinet and said that the project is well on its way to completion.
PM Skerrit said that they are happy with the progress and obviously they are on schedule for end of February transmission, so that Dominica can get it onto the individual homes and businesses. He highlighted that they want to recognise the leadership and the guidance of the Minister for Energy Dr. Vince Henderson on this project and for over an extended period of time.
Dr. Skerrit acknowledged the guidance given by Minister Henderson and his consistency of dedication towards the Geothermal project in Dominica. He praised Fred John for handling technical people at the site and for providing great leadership and technical skills.
ORMAT Technologies Inc. played an important role in constructing the Geothermal Power Plant and is working very professionally. Skerrit confirmed that Dominica will work with the company for next 25 years for good operation of the plant and extending energy into businesses, as they rely heavily on fossil fuels.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy – Dr. Vince Henderson said that he is very satisfied with the work of ORMAT. He said that they have been an excellent partner and faced no difficulties in cooperating with each other.
