St Kitts and Nevis: The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew along with other CARICOM Leaders visited Grenada on Wednesday. The aim of the visit was to access the damage that the first major hurricane of the Trans Atlantic Hurricane season has caused
Hurricane Beryl, which was the fastest Tropical Storm to transform into a level 4 hurricane affected several Caribbean islands. The islands of Carriacou, Petite Martinique and St. Vincent and The Grenadines were affected severely.
The leaders of the Caribbean Community, including the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis hav pledged their support to the affected islands in their recovery. Following up on the same, the Prime Ministers of St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and Grenada checked on the extent of damage.
The category 4 hurricane caused a landfall on the Carriacou, Petite Martinique and St. Vincent and The Grenadines. Dr Drew took to his social media account to share the thorough update on the visit.
He highlighted that he was accompanying Roosevelt Skerrit, the Prime Minister of Dominica, Philip J Pierre, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia and Dickon Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada. The leaders visited several families which were affected by the natural disaster.
PM Drew noted that witnessing the extent of damage in Grenada and Carriacou islands was heartbreaking. He highlighted that the devastation reminds them of the existencial threat that Climate Change poses for the people of Dominica.
The Caribbean leaders vowed to come together and support the affected nationsin this time of disaster. PM Terrance Drew also highlighted that they will visit the Prime Minister of St Vincent and The Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves shortly.
The Prime Minister Drew called for urgent climate action in light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. He further acknowledged that they need a unified approach to deal with the crisis.
PM Drew said that he was concerned for the people of Grenada, reflecting that this is a serious reminder that the Caribbean region is highly vulnerable. During the visit, the Prime Ministers discussed the most urgent needs of the people.
Further, they discussed the best way to support the recovery efforts of the affected nations.
